Priests of the god Amun-Ra of Heliopolis

The priests of Amun were the most powerful and wealthiest individuals in ancient Egypt. They controlled sacred rituals and oversaw temples holding power equal to or even surpassing that of the pharaohs in some periods. Their ability to interpret and proclaim Amun's prophecies strengthened the cult of Amun. During the late New Kingdom the High Priest of Amun in Thebes ruled Upper Egypt. The priests of Amun-Ra later became independent from the pharaohs in the north until conflicts arose with Akhenaten over his vast wealth acquired through conquests. Akhenaten attempted to diminish their power by abolishing the worship of Amun and instead focusing on the worship of the sun god Aten.

This black granite statue of the influential Vizier Paser of ancient Egypt is currently on display at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilizations (NMEC) in Cairo Egypt. The statue dates from the New Kingdom specifically the 19th Dynasty.

The priest of Amun representing the pharaoh's powerful life force was worshipped in Upper Egypt as the guardian of the seal and protector of the golden lands. He is depicted in significant New Kingdom Egyptian art shown in a crouching posture as the king's chief attendant encased in a block-like form with a granite torso. This image depicts the chief attendant and priest Sennefer during the reign of Amenhotep II from the 18th Dynasty of ancient Egypt approximately 1,427-1,400 BC. The sculpture depicts a kneeling figure wrapped in a long robe covered in hieroglyphic inscriptions that identify the name position and prayers to the Old Kingdom god.

The priest Djed Khonsu Iou.ef Ankh a black granite block statue depicts him in a squatting posture with his arms resting on his raised knees the entire surface of the statue elevated. This object is on display at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Antiquities Museum in Egypt.

This practice was popular only among the sun priests before the cult grew to its peak of power. The name of Amun appears on pyramid walls dating from 2,400-2,300 BC. The central priestly structure in Heliopolis constructed open-air temples to receive direct sunlight maintaining the balance of the solar system. Ancient Egyptian priests had primary duties in caring for the gods including singing Amun's songs crucial to important rituals playing percussion instruments or sistrums and performing dances in processions. Amun and Ra the gods responsible for maintaining cosmic balance and their singers were buried in elaborately decorated sarcophagi in important tombs.

Amanishakheto the Warrior Queen of Nubia reigned in the early 1st century. Her name written Amanishakheto in hieroglyphs means "Warrior Queen of Nubia" Along with her daughter she is the only African queen mentioned in the Bible who defeated the Roman army sent by the first Roman Emperor Augustus. Several monuments mentioning Amanishakheto have been found including in the Temple of Amun at Kawah on tablets from Meroe inscriptions found on the Banaga Vad and tablets from the ruins of the ancient city of Meroe.

Pharaoh Piye the Pharaoh of Kush began the Third Middle Period of Egyptian civilization with the establishment of the capitals Napata and Thebes the sacred mountain Jebel Barkal and was among the first group of ancient Egyptian pharaohs to rule a unified early Egypt. They revered and worshipped the god Amun. During the restoration of the Temple of Amun under Pharaoh Thutmose III Piede commissioned Egyptian stone carvers to rebuild it.

The Nubian Pyramids located in Sudan, were the site of royal burial grounds of the ancient Kingdom of Cush. These pyramids are steep and smaller than the pyramids in Egypt. Sudan has the largest number of pyramids in the world.

The tombs in Qustul are part of a civilization located on the east bank of the Nile River in Lower Nubia opposite Ballana near the Sudanese border. In the 1960s royal symbols similar to those of ancient Egypt or the Gyrzeh culture were used resembling the ancient Nubian civilization. The archaeological site of Umm el-Gaab near Abydos is older than the pyramids and served as a burial ground between 4,000 BC and 2,650 BC. Evidence and inscriptions bearing the name of the legendary and mysterious king who founded the first dynasty of Egypt have been discovered there. The Tablets of Narmer are crucial evidence indicating that Narmer unified Upper and Lower Egypt. The drawings on the tablets depict the king wearing the white crown of Upper Egypt and the red crown of Lower Egypt providing the most conclusive evidence of Narmer's unification of the two kingdoms. For thousands of years, the absence of statues or images clearly depicting his face has left his true appearance a mystery.

A pharaoh of the First Dynasty of ancient Egypt who according to classical legend is believed to have united Upper and Lower Egypt.

This object was used in rituals associated with power in pre-unification Egypt. The bas-relief depicts one of the oldest surviving Egyptian battle scenes. "Battlefield Tablets" from Ancient Egypt c. 3,300–3,100 BC. The clay and sandstone structure gives rise to various crafts including the earliest forms of writing beginning to appear on pottery and elaborately decorated tombs of the 3rd Naqada period and carved stone vessels.

When the First Dynasty ruled Egypt they immediately unified the country after Pharaoh Narmer unified Upper and Lower Egypt.

The back of the tablet shows two animals entangled with two men holding ropes around their necks and ten conquered men bound together with a banner bearer. The overall composition depicts a sacrifice of captives with the hieroglyphs on the Narmer Tablet signifying the unification of Egypt.

The Mediterranean Sea mystery Tonis Heraclion

Ancient Egypt has a centuries-long history revolving around a god of fertility. Around 2,700 years ago in what is now the Bay of Abukir far from Alexandria as a kingdom for centuries the region was also a center of international trade and a link to the Western world. Tonis-Heraklion was a thriving city an ancient Egyptian city that sank in the Mediterranean Sea near Alexandria during the late Pharaohs' era. The island of Heraklion and its central harbor collapsed the hardened clay quickly liquefied and buildings crumbled into the water. The massive waves at the time caused Tonis-Heraklion to sink beneath the Mediterranean Sea becoming mere ruins in the Bay of Abukir.

Thonis-Heracleion sank in Abu Qir Bay near Alexandria Egypt approximately 1,200 years ago. French underwater archaeologist Franck Goddio was exploring the submerged artifacts when he discovered the large granite statue of an Egyptian god or pharaoh which is over 3,000 years old.

Heraklion was formerly a village known as the Zoite settlement. The replaced Egyptian settlement occupies the area previously used by the indigenous Egyptians. It was roughly the size of Memphis the largest settlement in the Province of Thebaid. Unlike Nocrates the West Delta had Greek temples and the worship of Dionysus and Zeus. The city's population was also divided into various groups and tribes each with its own government. It has inscriptions and papyrus just like Greek cities.

Talamagos Ship

A remarkable shipwreck was discovered underwater in the eastern harbor of Alexandria. This vessel often called a Nile party boat or ceremonial boat was associated with festivals and religious processions. The wreck is located near the sunken island of Antirodos part of Portus Magnus a Roman port with a large network of harbors. Recent underwater rock carvings of ancient Egyptian pharaohs were also discovered near Aswan by a joint French-Egyptian expedition. Modern technology was used to document the discovery of the Thalamagos ship.

The wreckage of an ancient Egyptian pleasure ship has been discovered underwater near the ancient harbor of Alexandria. The ship is approximately 35 meters long and 7 meters wide believed to have been a luxury vessel for the upper class. The discovery includes a remarkably well-preserved wooden structure located less than 50 meters from the Temple of Isis.

The discovery was made by a team from the Greco-Roman port of Alexandria. The ship is approximately 28 meters long and 7 meters wide. Archaeologists continue to collect artifacts from the sunken city of Alexandria a city once plagued by earthquakes and rising sea levels. The latest joint French-Egyptian expedition utilizes modern technology capable of providing crucial historical insights into the rulers of the New and Late Kingdoms. Underwater carvings depict pharaohs including Thutmose IV Amenhotep III Psomtic II and Apriar. Many other artifacts have been found submerged in the Nile River near Aswan.

In the eighth year of his reign Ramses III subdued sea enemies near the Mediterranean coast who attempted to invade Egypt from its eastern land borders. Until the fall of Mycenae and the beginning of the Trojan War Ramses III also faced battles with the Libyans near Egypt's western borders as well as defending the Egyptians from invasions and attempts at settlement by seafarers or pirates until many people migrated from the vicinity. Pharaoh Ramses III again subdued Egypt's sea enemies.

The statue depicts Pharaoh Ramses III between the gods Horus and Seth a 20th Dynasty granite sculpture from Medinaet Habu. It stands approximately 195 centimeters tall and is currently on display at the Egyptian Museum. Pharaoh Ramses III is centered between the gods Horus and Seth who are performing the coronation ceremony for the pharaoh.

The image of Ramses as a conquering king dominates historical thought but an equally important image of the king is that of a religious ruler who submits to the will of the gods a tradition accepted by the dynasty. The cult of Amun first arose in ancient Libya before spreading to ancient Egypt. It is believed that thousands of years ago rulers who reigned in the Egyptian capital during the 21st and 22nd Dynasties from 1991 to 1802 BC built this temple earlier. The mystery beneath the Sphinx of Tanis remains a subject of debate with assumptions that it was built during the 4th or 12th Dynasty of Egypt. Surviving inscriptions mention the reign of Pharaoh Amenemhat II of the 12th Dynasty.

Later rulers took this opportunity to add inscriptions to the Sphinx. This period was a time of political stability and development including the true meaning of the statue in the Tanis language a diverse and culturally significant language. Several important pharaohs lived during this era including Amenemhat I and Senusret III. The only female pharaoh confirmed to have been inscribed is Sobekneferu.

The true origins of the Sphinx remain controversial. Overlapping inscriptions make it difficult to identify the builder of the Sphinx of Tanis. Some inscriptions are believed to belong to Pharaoh Amenemhet II and may contain original symbols thought to be missing from the Sphinx's head possibly representing a crown on Tanis's forehead altered by later rulers.

Some are believed to belong to Pharaoh Amenemhet II and hold various secrets connected to the Sphinx of Tanis a pink granite statue from the New Kingdom period found in the ruins of the Temple of Amun-Ra in Tanis. The cult of Amun originated in ancient Libya before spreading to ancient Egypt with the Sphinx of Tanis having the body of a lion and the head of a human symbolizing power and protection.

The Golden Age believed to be the most significant period for the Sphinx of Tanis dates back to the Fourth Dynasty of ancient Egypt approximately 2,613 to 2,498 BC. This era was a time of peace and prosperity with recorded trade with other nations. The construction of pyramids during the Third Dynasty led to a flourishing of arts and the construction of the Staba Mausoleum. The constructions undertaken by King Sneferup led to the creation of flat pyramids on the Giza plain.

Tanis a major archaeological site in the northeastern Nile Delta of Egypt is the location of the city of the same name. It was the capital of the Egyptian Empire during the 21st and 22nd Dynasties situated on a branch of the Nile River called Tanis. Some of the monuments discovered in Tanis date back to before the 21st Dynasty. A notable achievement of these kings is the construction and expansion of the Great Temple of Amun-Ra at Tanis.
