The Golden Mask of Pharaoh Tutankhamun

Pharaoh Tutankhamun as a revival of traditional polytheism ascended to the throne at approximately 8 or 9 years old and died at around 18 or 19. Widely known as the "Young King" he ruled from approximately 1332 to 1323 BC. Tutankhamun's tomb contains a single chamber with paintings inside which are several large gilded wooden altars surrounding the red quartzite sarcophagus of Pharaoh Tutankhamun. Stairs descend to a solid rock ledge leading to a sealed door.

The tomb is relatively small and was built during the Eighteenth Dynasty. It contains the pharaoh and his superimposed sarcophagus along with a disassembled chariot a bed and various pieces of furniture a distinctive gold mask and over 5,000 treasures most of which remain remarkably well-preserved. The tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun KV62 is located in the Valley of the Kings in Luxor Egypt. Discovered by British archaeologist Howard Carter on 4 November 1922

A symbol of the pharaoh's power over enemies this staff is one of over 130 found in his tomb. The gilded stone-inlaid staff of Pharaoh Tutankhamun was discovered in his tomb. The artwork depicts two prisoners of war and the golden Canopic Shrine of Pharaoh Tutankhamun. This artifact was found inside the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun KV62 in the Valley of the Kings. The structure is made of gilded wood and decorated with sculptures of guardian goddesses and large storage jars.

Protection balance a symbol of theological strength victory over chaos. It depicts the pharaoh in the form of a sphinx with a human head. The ceremonial shield of Pharaoh Tutankhamun is depicted trampling his enemies and a replica of Tutankhamun's chariot made of wood and gilded is on display. The discovery of a perfectly preserved tomb and its sudden death have become a perplexing mystery encompassing both the cause of death and a curse believed to claim the lives of tomb trespassers. This chariot has six-spoked wheels an example of New Dynasty Egyptian engineering. The bas-relief carvings on the chariot depict the pharaoh and religious symbols. This replica chariot is part of the Tutankhamun treasure exhibition and some archaeologists believe there may be an unexplored secret chamber behind the tomb walls possibly containing the remains of Queen Nefertiti.

Ramses III emphasized his close relationship with the gods highlighting the Temple of Amun-Ra and other significant temples in his literature lithography and architecture. He was the first king since Akhenaten to compose psalms inscribed in the Temple of Amun at Karnak. In terms of his personal devotion to Amun-Ra Ramses III's literature employs religious themes in a unique way promoting the ancient Egyptian deity as a religious figure. Considering personal beliefs in the will of the Egyptian gods the rigorous rituals of the past flourished throughout Egypt during Ramses III's reign. To this effect Ramses demonstrated the use of religious forms of compassion and mutual assistance to express devotion to the gods.

The late reign of Ramses III led to greater prosperity with the construction of houses and the donation of large tracts of land to the most important temples in Thebes Memphis and Heliopolis. He reigned for 31 years. According to the Harris Papyrus Ramses III integrated cultural and religious changes into law. Ancient Egyptian beliefs and culture changed as the priest Amun-Ra gained increasing political power and influence. Religious changes began during the pharaohs' reigns culminating in protests over money increased construction of royal tombs, political unrest food shortages depleting royal treasuries harsh weather and the beginning of Ramses III's reign a period of significant cultural and religious stability for Egypt. Wars with sea guerrillas in the Mediterranean followed.

The Temple of Ramesses III located within the Karnak Temple Complex in Luxor Egypt is primarily a large stone pylon that was once part of a temple dedicated to Pharaoh Ramesses III.

The restoration of Egyptian temples prior to religious and cultural changes and the burial temple of Ramses III built at Medina Habu depictions of battles with sea guerrillas in elaborate costumes and attire and victories over enemies symbolized the temple of the powerful pharaoh. Ramses III's reign saw religious and cultural shifts leading to a new relationship between the Egyptians and their gods impacting the king's identification and interaction with the divine world. Pharaoh Ramses III A Powerful Warrior

Ramses III was a powerful warrior pharaoh. Bas-reliefs depict the pharaoh slaying his enemies. The image shows the mighty and powerful warrior king subduing adversaries on walls battling seafarers or pirates. In the eighth year of his reign Ramses III subdued sea enemies near the Mediterranean coast who attempted to invade Egypt from its eastern land borders. Until the fall of Mycenae and the beginning of the Trojan War Ramses III also faced battles with the Libyans near Egypt's western borders as well as defending the Egyptians from invasions and attempts at settlement by seafarers or pirates until many people migrated from the vicinity. Pharaoh Ramses III again subdued Egypt's sea enemies.

The statue depicts Pharaoh Ramses III between the gods Horus and Seth a 20th Dynasty granite sculpture from Medinaet Habu. It stands approximately 195 centimeters tall and is currently on display at the Egyptian Museum. Pharaoh Ramses III is centered between the gods Horus and Seth who are performing the coronation ceremony for the pharaoh.

The image of Ramses as a conquering king dominates historical thought but an equally important image of the king is that of a religious ruler who submits to the will of the gods a tradition accepted by the dynasty. In contrast his religious texts present the idea of a devout king son of the gods and a god-first worshipper. He was humble and driven by a desire to serve the gods and submit to divine will reflecting the emergence of a powerful new religion unique to ancient Egyptian dynastic literature.

The Black Pharaoh's Pyramid of the Kush Dynasty

The Meroe Pyramids located in Sudan are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This site comprises over 200 ancient pyramids built by the Kingdom of Kush. These pyramids are characterized by their smaller size and steeper slopes compared to the pyramids of Egypt. Efforts are currently underway to protect this cultural heritage site amidst ongoing conflicts in the region. Southern cultures gradually replaced Egyptian cultural heritage. The pharaohs of the Kush dynasty migrated south to the savannas of Sudan and established their capital at Meroe. In terms of the afterlife northern cemeteries at Meroe during the 3rd and 4th centuries BC became the focus.

The Pyramids of Meroe located in northeastern Sudan are Nubian-style pyramids that are narrower and steeper than typical Egyptian pyramids. These pyramids served as ancient tombs for the kings and queens of the Kingdom of Cush.

It is believed that due to the existence of earthly life in the past the construction of large tombs as permanent dwellings for the dead reflected the earthly status of the pharaoh son of Amun-Ra the sun god. His life followed a cycle akin to the rising and setting of the sun and his union with the gods in heaven at night a stairway to paradise. Beneath these tombs a burial site was discovered in a cemetery near the ancient city of Kematon in Sudan. These pyramids are over 2,000 years old and date back to the reign of the kingdom known as Kush in Sudan. Some pyramids were not built as tombs some are buried beneath simple rectangular structures called mastabas some have stone stacks on top called tumulis while others show no signs of burial.

The Pyramids of Meroe located in Sudan and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site were built by the Kingdom of Kush approximately 2,700 to 2,300 years ago. They are Nubian-style pyramids characterized by their narrower and steeper slopes compared to typical Egyptian pyramids.

A large steep pyramid stands at the very top. The pyramids symbolizing the stairway to heaven were lavishly decorated. A small chapel on the east side was used for offerings to deceased pharaohs and as a place for prayer and funeral ceremonies. The chapel doors overlooking the sunrise illuminated the altar in the back wall. During the late Middle Kingdom the Black pharaohs of the Kush dynasty ceased pyramid construction.

The cave tombs with their underground chambers and passages symbolized the nighttime dwelling of the sun god. The 223 pyramids in Nubia exceed those in Egypt by 16. The pyramids have three main sections each containing an underground tomb symbolizing the underworld where mummies lie. The mummies of pharaohs and queens were placed on beds according to the ancient Kerma tradition filled with small statues of people destined to be resurrected by the gods.

The Secrets Hidden in the Sphinx of Tanis

The cult of Amun first arose in ancient Libya before spreading to ancient Egypt. It is believed that thousands of years ago rulers who reigned in the Egyptian capital during the 21st and 22nd Dynasties from 1991 to 1802 BC built this temple earlier. The mystery beneath the Sphinx of Tanis remains a subject of debate with assumptions that it was built during the 4th or 12th Dynasty of Egypt. Surviving inscriptions mention the reign of Pharaoh Amenemhat II of the 12th Dynasty.

Later rulers took this opportunity to add inscriptions to the Sphinx. This period was a time of political stability and development including the true meaning of the statue in the Tanis language a diverse and culturally significant language. Several important pharaohs lived during this era including Amenemhat I and Senusret III. The only female pharaoh confirmed to have been inscribed is Sobekneferu.

The true origins of the Sphinx remain controversial. Overlapping inscriptions make it difficult to identify the builder of the Sphinx of Tanis. Some inscriptions are believed to belong to Pharaoh Amenemhet II and may contain original symbols thought to be missing from the Sphinx's head possibly representing a crown on Tanis's forehead altered by later rulers.

Some are believed to belong to Pharaoh Amenemhet II and hold various secrets connected to the Sphinx of Tanis a pink granite statue from the New Kingdom period found in the ruins of the Temple of Amun-Ra in Tanis. The cult of Amun originated in ancient Libya before spreading to ancient Egypt with the Sphinx of Tanis having the body of a lion and the head of a human symbolizing power and protection.

The Era of Peace

The Golden Age believed to be the most significant period for the Sphinx of Tanis dates back to the Fourth Dynasty of ancient Egypt approximately 2,613 to 2,498 BC. This era was a time of peace and prosperity with recorded trade with other nations. The construction of pyramids during the Third Dynasty led to a flourishing of arts and the construction of the Staba Mausoleum. The constructions undertaken by King Sneferup led to the creation of flat pyramids on the Giza plain.

Tanis a major archaeological site in the northeastern Nile Delta of Egypt is the location of the city of the same name. It was the capital of the Egyptian Empire during the 21st and 22nd Dynasties situated on a branch of the Nile River called Tanis. Some of the monuments discovered in Tanis date back to before the 21st Dynasty. A notable achievement of these kings is the construction and expansion of the Great Temple of Amun-Ra at Tanis.

The mastaba near the Great Pyramid of Giza is the site of the discovery of the famous Meidum Geese painting It is a rectangular building with a flat roof serving as a prototype for the pyramids Most mastabas are located in important royal cemeteries in northern Egypt and Meidum is also an archaeological site that served as a gathering place for nobles and pharaohs A lifelike and perfectly preserved statue of Mereruaca was found in the main chamber at the far end of the mastaba of the first pharaoh of the Sixth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom of Egypt

Although most of the chambers in the mastaba were lavishly decorated it remained hidden from public view until its discovery by Jean-Jacques de Morgan of the Egyptian Antiquities Department in 1892. The statue of Mereruaca remains remarkably well-preserved and unique. This tomb in Saqqara comprises 32 chambers including the false door housing the statue of Mereruaca.

The walls of the burial chamber inside the Mastaba of Mereruka in the ancient cemetery of Saqqara Egypt feature carvings and hieroglyphs dating back to the 6th Dynasty during the reign of Pharaoh Teti around 2,340 BC.

The mastaba of Mereruaca depicts sculptors and carpenters at work telling stories of various creations ranging from pottery making and hunting to furniture making people rowing boats and wall carvings. Lush Nile riverside scenes from Egyptian swamp hunting scenes are depicted within the tomb of the goddess Mereruaca. In addition to its position during the Sixth Dynasty records within the tomb of Mereruaca also date back to the Old Kingdom of ancient Egypt during the time of Pharaohs Nemtima I and Userkare. This includes the remains of Pepe I of the 6th Dynasty of Egypt.

Inside the mastaba there are three smaller tombs for family members Mereruka his wife Princess Watetkhethor and their son Meryteti The 16 walls of the chambers are intricately decorated with bas-reliefs depicting daily life of the time such as hunting fishing pottery making and crafts. The bas-reliefs portray everyday life and the environment of the Old Kingdom. The Mastaba of Mereruka located in the Saqqara burial grounds of Egypt is a large rectangular structure built around 2,310 BC.

The surrounding landscape is a desert and the Dahshur Pyramids can be seen in the distance on the horizon. The mystery of the Mastaba A journey to complete the afterlife. "Ka" the spark of life created by the god Khnum along with the individual separates from the body upon death existing as a shadow or a replica of the deceased. A false door a passageway for the soul of the deceased called Ka to travel between the world of the living and the world of the dead.

The exterior ruins of the Mastaba of Mereruka in Saqqara Egypt part of a larger necropolis near the Step Pyramid of Djoser. This limestone structure was built during the 6th Dynasty of ancient Egypt around the 24th century BC.

It's as if one is walking through a stone wall emerging from the afterlife. Ancient frescoes depict Mereruka in a triangular kilt typical of Old Kingdom nobility as if passing through a stone wall from the afterlife. This imagery appears to evoke a sense of passage from the altar in the tomb of Mereruka an influential nobleman and vizier of the 6th Dynasty of ancient Egypt. The statue is located within the Mastaba of Mereruka in the Saqqara necropolis.
