The bust of Nefertiti is a limestone

Nefertiti is one of the most famous queens of ancient Egypt in world history. Her name means "beautiful visitor." She was the principal wife of Pharaoh Akhenaten of the 18th Dynasty of the New Kingdom and one of the most influential women of the Amarna period making her bust a world-renowned artifact. 6 December 6 1912 during a major archaeological excavation at the site German archaeologists led by Ludwig Borshard discovered the bust in Pharaoh Thutmose's study. Made of limestone and covered with intricately painted stucco it stands 48 centimeters tall. It is believed that the Amarna art was created in 1345 BC by the sculptor Thutmose in Amarna Egypt. There is debate regarding the accuracy of the artistic interpretation of this digital reproduction which differs from the well-known idealized busts depicting a lighter complexion. This includes its current significance and status as a masterpiece of art.

Amarna art is one of the most transformative periods in the aesthetic history of ancient Egypt. Unlike previous periods Amarna art depicts scenes of fertility private life of the royal family under the sun Aten frequent resting and sitting on laps. Tel el-Amarna in ancient Egypt one of the most important archaeological sites in Egypt is located near Akhetaten once a center of worship for the sun god Aten. After Akhetaten's death the city was quickly abandoned and destroyed in an attempt to erase the memory of the new religion and return to the worship of the original gods. Although Nefertiti suddenly disappears from historical records and played a significant role in the governance and religious reforms alongside Pharaoh Akhetaten the location of her remains has left archaeologists baffled as to the exact location of her "missing tomb and body." Some believe her remains may be hidden in a secret chamber within the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun.

The Stone of Dreams Under the Shadow of the Great Sphinx

A vision under the shadow of the Sphinx led Pharaoh Thutmose IV to bring about changes in Egypt bolstering his power to strengthen all its borders. The image shows Thutmose IV standing to his left and right raising the Sphinx over the king's shoulders. The Sphinx was a powerful guardian of the tombs and pyramids of Giza for millennia. According to Thutmose IV's vision sand from the temple surrounds the decaying Sphinx statue standing beside the passageway connecting the Pyramid of Khafre to the Temple of the Valley. The Sphinx and Pyramid of Khafre Egypt's most mysterious monuments are colossal statues with the torso of a lion and a human head complete with large front paws. They date back to the reign of Pharaoh Khafre and inscriptions were discovered on reused doorposts at the entrance to what is believed to be the burial site of Pharaoh Khafre under the vision of the Sphinx's shadow.

The "Dream Stele" of Pharaoh Thutmose IV made of granite and situated between the legs of the Great Sphinx of Giza was erected in the first year of his reign around 1,401 BC to record a dream in which he received the promise of becoming pharaoh for caring for the Sphinx.

The stone on the Sphinx's bust tells the story of Thutmose and the idea of a temple or passageway beneath the Sphinx. Pharaoh Thutmose IV had a vision that if he helped remove the sand that buried the Sphinx he would become a legendary king. He ascended the throne after fulfilling the vision. This stone is a testament to the pharaoh's connection with the gods of ancient Egyptian religion during the reign of Thutmose IV as well as the legitimacy of his rule between 1,401 and 1,391 BC.

The intricately carved dream inscription shows an offering to the legendary Egyptian Sphinx along with a promise from Pharaoh Thutmose IV to rule Egypt. As the Sphinx was buried under the sand that covered it up to its neck Pharaoh Thutmose stopped beneath its head while hunting and soon fell asleep and thus began the promise from Pharaoh Thutmose IV "The sands of the desert have covered me." If the sand is removed from the Great Sphinx Thutmose IV will be a legendary pharaoh.

The chariot of Pharaoh Thutmose IV from the 18th Dynasty discovered in his tomb (KV43) in the Valley of the Kings depicts Pharaoh Thutmose IV riding his chariot and firing arrows at his enemies. This artifact is currently on display at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilizations (NMEC) in Cairo.

The Stone of Dreams confirms the Sphinx's promise to install Pharaoh Thutmose IV as king of Egypt if he removes the sand from the Sphinx so that he may rule Egypt himself upon his father's death. The reign of Thutmose IV who brought transformation to Egypt and promoted his power through the construction of entire borders and a tall obelisk with a gate at its base built between 1,401–1,391 BC is depicted here. This rectangular stone is 3.6 meters high and weighs 15 tons. The granite monument was erected between the Sphinx's feet. The Stone of Dreams of Thutmose IV appears to refer to the desert patrols of Thutmose's forces to protect certain gold mining routes in the eastern Egyptian desert from Nubian attacks and to strengthen the rule and defense of Egyptian territory under the shadow of the Great Sphinx which had legitimized the reign of Pharaoh Thutmose IV.

The White Land stretched along the Nile Valley in the Southern Kingdom from Atfih to Gebel Essilsila at Neken later called Hierakonpolis near the present city of Edfu. The city was located on the western bank of the Nile. Excavations in 1897 found a sacrificial treasury or main treasury in the Neken Temple dating back to the early pharaonic period on the eastern bank opposite Neken el-Kab the center of vulture rituals. Nekhbet the patron goddess of the early kingdom was an important center. When archaeologist Quibell found the temple at Nekhbet and the sacrificial treasury he proved that the former southern capital of the White Land the center of vulture rituals Nekhbet and the pre-pharaonic kingdoms in both lands were true.

The magnificent frescoes and ceiling paintings inside the Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari Egypt depict the goddess Nekhbet in the form of a vulture with outstretched wings and a row of cobras a symbol of protection for the pharaoh. The vibrant colors date back to the 18th Dynasty around 1,470 BC.

The Golden Mask of Pharaoh Tutankhamun

Pharaoh Tutankhamun as a revival of traditional polytheism ascended to the throne at approximately 8 or 9 years old and died at around 18 or 19. Widely known as the "Young King" he ruled from approximately 1332 to 1323 BC. Tutankhamun's tomb contains a single chamber with paintings inside which are several large gilded wooden altars surrounding the red quartzite sarcophagus of Pharaoh Tutankhamun. Stairs descend to a solid rock ledge leading to a sealed door.

The tomb is relatively small and was built during the Eighteenth Dynasty. It contains the pharaoh and his superimposed sarcophagus along with a disassembled chariot a bed and various pieces of furniture a distinctive gold mask and over 5,000 treasures most of which remain remarkably well-preserved. The tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun KV62 is located in the Valley of the Kings in Luxor Egypt. Discovered by British archaeologist Howard Carter on 4 November 1922

This replica chariot is part of the Tutankhamun treasure exhibition and some archaeologists believe there may be an unexplored secret chamber behind the tomb walls possibly containing the remains of Queen Nefertiti.

Pharaoh Menes conquered enemy territories

The archaeological site of Umm el-Gaab near Abydos is older than the pyramids and served as a burial ground between 4,000 BC and 2,650 BC. Evidence and inscriptions bearing the name of the legendary and mysterious king who founded the first dynasty of Egypt have been discovered there. The Tablets of Narmer are crucial evidence indicating that Narmer unified Upper and Lower Egypt. The drawings on the tablets depict the king wearing the white crown of Upper Egypt and the red crown of Lower Egypt providing the most conclusive evidence of Narmer's unification of the two kingdoms. For thousands of years, the absence of statues or images clearly depicting his face has left his true appearance a mystery.

A pharaoh of the First Dynasty of ancient Egypt who according to classical legend is believed to have united Upper and Lower Egypt.

This object was used in rituals associated with power in pre-unification Egypt. The bas-relief depicts one of the oldest surviving Egyptian battle scenes. "Battlefield Tablets" from Ancient Egypt c. 3,300–3,100 BC. The clay and sandstone structure gives rise to various crafts including the earliest forms of writing beginning to appear on pottery and elaborately decorated tombs of the 3rd Naqada period and carved stone vessels.

The Narmer Palette is an ancient Egyptian bas-relief stone tablet created around 3,150 BC to celebrate the reunification of Upper and Lower Egypt. Carved by Pharaoh Narmer from greywacke it was found in Hierakonpolis and is currently on display at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.

The Old Kingdom the foundation of society was built organized and power was centralized in architecture literature art construction and metalwork. Monuments and the Great Pyramid are evident. After Pharaoh Menes the first pharaoh of the 1st Dynasty was crowned and participated in the ceremony with carvings on his mace depicting his marriage to the heir of the Red Land along with offerings unearthed in the main collection at the temple in Hierakonpolis.

Neshen is another important event included in several tombs as part of the decoration of ritual tablets and to record significant events demonstrating faith in the gods for victory in unifying Egypt. Ancient Egyptians believed that Pharaoh Menes was an avatar of the sun god who descended to rule over humanity and the Egyptians. He was the first pharaoh to rule all of Egypt marking the beginning of the First Dynasty a period when power was centralized in the city of Tinnis. When the First Dynasty ruled Egypt they immediately unified the country after Pharaoh Narmer unified Upper and Lower Egypt.

The recording of events on the Narmer Tablets reinforced slate slabs known as the Narmer Stone depicts a Pharaoh in a white crown beating a northern tribal chief and captives followed by a man in charge holding the Pharaoh's teapot and sandals and below two slain men. The back of the tablet shows two animals entangled with two men holding ropes around their necks and ten conquered men bound together with a banner bearer. The overall composition depicts a sacrifice of captives with the hieroglyphs on the Narmer Tablet signifying the unification of Egypt.

Ramses III emphasized his close relationship with the gods highlighting the Temple of Amun-Ra and other significant temples in his literature lithography and architecture. He was the first king since Akhenaten to compose psalms inscribed in the Temple of Amun at Karnak. In terms of his personal devotion to Amun-Ra Ramses III's literature employs religious themes in a unique way promoting the ancient Egyptian deity as a religious figure. Considering personal beliefs in the will of the Egyptian gods the rigorous rituals of the past flourished throughout Egypt during Ramses III's reign. To this effect Ramses demonstrated the use of religious forms of compassion and mutual assistance to express devotion to the gods.

Ramses III was a powerful warrior pharaoh. Bas-reliefs depict the pharaoh slaying his enemies. The image shows the mighty and powerful warrior king subduing adversaries on walls battling seafarers or pirates. In the eighth year of his reign Ramses III subdued sea enemies near the Mediterranean coast who attempted to invade Egypt from its eastern land borders. Until the fall of Mycenae and the beginning of the Trojan War Ramses III also faced battles with the Libyans near Egypt's western borders as well as defending the Egyptians from invasions and attempts at settlement by seafarers or pirates until many people migrated from the vicinity. Pharaoh Ramses III again subdued Egypt's sea enemies.

The statue depicts Pharaoh Ramses III between the gods Horus and Seth a 20th Dynasty granite sculpture from Medinaet Habu. It stands approximately 195 centimeters tall and is currently on display at the Egyptian Museum. Pharaoh Ramses III is centered between the gods Horus and Seth who are performing the coronation ceremony for the pharaoh.

The image of Ramses as a conquering king dominates historical thought but an equally important image of the king is that of a religious ruler who submits to the will of the gods a tradition accepted by the dynasty. In contrast his religious texts present the idea of a devout king son of the gods and a god-first worshipper. He was humble and driven by a desire to serve the gods and submit to divine will reflecting the emergence of a powerful new religion unique to ancient Egyptian dynastic literature.

The Secrets Hidden in the Sphinx of Tanis

The cult of Amun first arose in ancient Libya before spreading to ancient Egypt. It is believed that thousands of years ago rulers who reigned in the Egyptian capital during the 21st and 22nd Dynasties from 1991 to 1802 BC built this temple earlier. The mystery beneath the Sphinx of Tanis remains a subject of debate with assumptions that it was built during the 4th or 12th Dynasty of Egypt. Surviving inscriptions mention the reign of Pharaoh Amenemhat II of the 12th Dynasty.

Later rulers took this opportunity to add inscriptions to the Sphinx. This period was a time of political stability and development including the true meaning of the statue in the Tanis language a diverse and culturally significant language. Several important pharaohs lived during this era including Amenemhat I and Senusret III. The only female pharaoh confirmed to have been inscribed is Sobekneferu.

The true origins of the Sphinx remain controversial. Overlapping inscriptions make it difficult to identify the builder of the Sphinx of Tanis. Some inscriptions are believed to belong to Pharaoh Amenemhet II and may contain original symbols thought to be missing from the Sphinx's head possibly representing a crown on Tanis's forehead altered by later rulers.

Some are believed to belong to Pharaoh Amenemhet II and hold various secrets connected to the Sphinx of Tanis a pink granite statue from the New Kingdom period found in the ruins of the Temple of Amun-Ra in Tanis. The cult of Amun originated in ancient Libya before spreading to ancient Egypt with the Sphinx of Tanis having the body of a lion and the head of a human symbolizing power and protection.

The Era of Peace

The Golden Age believed to be the most significant period for the Sphinx of Tanis dates back to the Fourth Dynasty of ancient Egypt approximately 2,613 to 2,498 BC. This era was a time of peace and prosperity with recorded trade with other nations. The construction of pyramids during the Third Dynasty led to a flourishing of arts and the construction of the Staba Mausoleum. The constructions undertaken by King Sneferup led to the creation of flat pyramids on the Giza plain.

Tanis a major archaeological site in the northeastern Nile Delta of Egypt is the location of the city of the same name. It was the capital of the Egyptian Empire during the 21st and 22nd Dynasties situated on a branch of the Nile River called Tanis. Some of the monuments discovered in Tanis date back to before the 21st Dynasty. A notable achievement of these kings is the construction and expansion of the Great Temple of Amun-Ra at Tanis.

The Cycle of the Sun's Rebirth

In ancient Egyptian mythology two parallel yet interconnected forms of afterlife exist cyclical and eternally linear. Both forms share corresponding temporal aspects this process is the rebirth of the sun and the souls of the dead from the underworld to the world of the living every morning. The dead are reborn in a cycle a resurrection pattern mirroring the sun.

The cosmological relationship of the gods involves Osiris the god of death who is reborn in a cycle like the sun god appearing on the ceiling of Ramses' tomb resurrected in the east at dawn and reappearing on the eastern horizon. This cyclical parallel gender element signifies the rebirth of the sun a crucial moment in the process that akin to the creation of the rebirth mechanism. The sun receives new life energy and thus Osiris is able to come back to life in the ritual texts of ancient Egyptian mythology. This fusion of human characteristics and the geographical features of the western horizon is depicted in the Book of the Dead.

The frescoes inside the tomb of Pharaoh Ramesses VI in the Valley of the Kings depict scenes from the "Book of the Earth" an ancient Egyptian religious record concerning the cosmology and the afterlife.

The tomb walls are adorned with carvings and ancient texts including the Book of Gates and the Book of Caverns which depict the tomb's interior as an underground river through which the sun and the pharaoh sailed at night overcoming obstacles and being resurrected at dawn. The architecture is a display of light with the pharaoh's symbol being the sun disc often depicted as a human with a falcon's head with the solar disc surrounded by cobras on its head. The life-giving power of the sun and the god Ra Ancient Egyptians believed that Ra created the universe sailing his solar barque across the sky during the day to provide light and growth to all life. In the Abu Simbel temple of Pharaoh Ramses II the magic of sunlight shining directly into the sacred chambers illuminates the statues of the pharaoh and other gods merging with other deities such as Amun to form Amun-Ra the king of the Egyptian gods in the New Kingdom. The sun god the heart of the universe and the source of all energy represents life growth and resurrection.

Just as the sun rises and sets daily receiving new life energy Osiris is thus able to come back to life in the ritual texts of ancient Egyptian mythology a fusion of human characteristics and the geographical features of the western horizon. In creation myths… Ancient Egyptians believed that the god Ra was born from the ocean of chaos creating himself and light. He is often symbolized by a sun halo or a man with the head of a falcon like Horus covered with a cobra Uraeus representing supreme power. As he grew older he eventually merged with other gods such as Amun-Ra in Thebes becoming the supreme deity of Egypt worshipped for thousands of years.

The mastaba near the Great Pyramid of Giza is the site of the discovery of the famous Meidum Geese painting It is a rectangular building with a flat roof serving as a prototype for the pyramids Most mastabas are located in important royal cemeteries in northern Egypt and Meidum is also an archaeological site that served as a gathering place for nobles and pharaohs A lifelike and perfectly preserved statue of Mereruaca was found in the main chamber at the far end of the mastaba of the first pharaoh of the Sixth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom of Egypt

Although most of the chambers in the mastaba were lavishly decorated it remained hidden from public view until its discovery by Jean-Jacques de Morgan of the Egyptian Antiquities Department in 1892. The statue of Mereruaca remains remarkably well-preserved and unique. This tomb in Saqqara comprises 32 chambers including the false door housing the statue of Mereruaca.

The walls of the burial chamber inside the Mastaba of Mereruka in the ancient cemetery of Saqqara Egypt feature carvings and hieroglyphs dating back to the 6th Dynasty during the reign of Pharaoh Teti around 2,340 BC.

The mastaba of Mereruaca depicts sculptors and carpenters at work telling stories of various creations ranging from pottery making and hunting to furniture making people rowing boats and wall carvings. Lush Nile riverside scenes from Egyptian swamp hunting scenes are depicted within the tomb of the goddess Mereruaca. In addition to its position during the Sixth Dynasty records within the tomb of Mereruaca also date back to the Old Kingdom of ancient Egypt during the time of Pharaohs Nemtima I and Userkare. This includes the remains of Pepe I of the 6th Dynasty of Egypt.

Ramses II the ruler of Egypt during its golden age was considered one of the most powerful and famous kings of the Egyptian Empire. His formidable army was powerful enough to conquer Syria Nubia and the Hittite territories. He built numerous temples and monuments established a new capital and constructed fortified cities to protect routes from enemies. His reign resulted in a stalemate with neither side achieving a decisive victory. Ramesses II also built or restored other temples in Nubia such as the Beit el-Wali a house of priests and religious leaders. Surviving carvings depict the brutality of warfare in Nubia Syria and Libya are still present today.

The Abu Simbel Temple in Egypt was a temple built for King Ramses II. It is located in the Aswan region.

The Derr Temple is remarkable as it is the only rock temple in Nubia located on the east bank of the Nile River. This includes the stone pillars inside the temple which are not oriented towards the central axis as usual but rather face the entrance and the Gerf Hussein temple.
